Australia has been invaded by American fast food chains over the last two years, with Five Guys opening in Sydney and Melbourne. Even the Wahlburgs have moved in with their first Wahlburgers gracing Sydney’s Circular Quay earlier this year. Now, the burger chain Wendy’s has its eyes set on Australia—not to be confused with our sacred Wendy’s Milk Bar.
The Wendy’s franchise has more than 7000 restaurants worldwide, and its first new Australian restaurant is set to open soon, although a location is yet to be decided on. We do know they plan to open hundreds across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and other major cities.
“We believe Australia is a lucrative market for long-term growth. We think that the Australian market could be hundreds of restaurants,” said, Wendy’s chief development officer, Abigal Pringle in a The Australian interview.
Pringle said the company had to be careful about the timeline of its Australian rollout because it needed to ensure it found “the right partner”.
“But we think that we can have hundreds of restaurants in the market over time,” she said.
Surprisingly though, this isn’t Wendy’s first foray into Australia. The U.S burger chain first opened restaurants in Australia in the 1970s, and lasted until last least 1986 before all locations were purchased by Hungry Jack’s.
It seems as though the majority of the restaurants were located in southeast Melbourne, but Wendy’s was also seen in Sydney in 2021 when they hosted a pop-up in The Rocks.
For those unfamiliar with the U.S burger chain, here’s a taste. Wendy’s is best known for their square hamburgers (although they call them sandwiches), french fries, and a frozen dairy drink called ‘The Frosty’. In the U.S., you might hear the locals froth over the baconator, which is a beef hamburger stacked with six pieces of bacon. They love it, but the Aussie version could be a little different. Some other very American menu items include a loaded baked potato, chilli cheese fries, and chilli you can get in a cup.
If that excites you, stay tuned for more updates on Australia’s first Wendy’s location and opening date.
Mexican restaurant chain Mad Mex has dropped a new protein, and it’s one of the most popular street foods in Mexico.
Enter, Chicken Al Pastor. It’s traditionally made with pork and grilled on a spinning rotisserie with a pineapple sitting a top, but Mad Mex has put its own spin on it, serving chicken bathed in an Al Pastor marinade with a touch of juicy pineapple.
You can order the protein-packed filling in your favourite burrito, bowl, quesadilla, nachos, or in a taco.
As always, these things are here for a good time, not a long time. Pop into your local Mad Mex restaurant, order delivery or through the Mad Mex app today.
