Wouldn’t it be nice to work on your next novel, poem or essay without the distraction of a roommate, honking cars, or just any sound, other than birds chirping in the trees? If you’re a writer who has always wanted the time and space to finish a body of work or start one, then this competition is for you.
Unyoked, the off-grid tiny cabin company, is searching for up and coming writers to submit nature writing, poems, and short essays, for a chance to join their writer’s residency program and the opportunity to be published in the very first Unyoked Anthology. The company is known for their off-grid experiences, immersing travellers in Attenborough-level wilderness, tapping into a new level of creative and productive energy—powered by nature.
Interested? Here’s what you need to know.
When do Unyoked’s Writer’s Residency submissions open?
From Wednesday, 7 April to Sunday, 30 May, writers can submit their 800 words through Unyoked.
Is there a topic or theme?
The Anthology is looking to include pieces that are vivid, evocative and fresh, inspired by the awe of the wilderness. Rather than simply a travelogue, successful submissions will capture the thrill of nature, and the intense awe and perspective that stay with us—even in the concrete jungle.
Who judges the submissions?
All submissions will be blind judged by an industry panel from creative, media and publishing. The panel consists of Alyx Gorman, lifestyle editor of The Guardian Australia, Jazz Money, Wiradjuri poet and artist, Georgia Frances King, literary editor, and Zac Bayly lauded Australian editor, feature writer and consultant.
Where are the cabins located?
Four Wilderness Residents will be selected for the initiative, receiving regular, no-strings access to Unyoked cabins for the next six months to let their imaginative spirits run wild.
Who will edit the submissions and when will they be published?
Collected final submissions will be edited by award-winning editor and publisher Liz Schaffer, founder of Lodestars Anthology. Once compiled and published, the Anthology will not only have a permanent place in every Unyoked cabin, it will be released and available to pre-order on Unyoked and select partners from November 14, 2021.
In addition to the four Wilderness Residents published in print, Unyoked’s first Anthology will feature the work of nearly two dozen finalists, personally selected by the three judges. Every successful finalist will be paid for their work and syndicated to Unyoked’s website.
Mexican restaurant chain Mad Mex has dropped a new protein, and it’s one of the most popular street foods in Mexico.
Enter, Chicken Al Pastor. It’s traditionally made with pork and grilled on a spinning rotisserie with a pineapple sitting a top, but Mad Mex has put its own spin on it, serving chicken bathed in an Al Pastor marinade with a touch of juicy pineapple.
You can order the protein-packed filling in your favourite burrito, bowl, quesadilla, nachos, or in a taco.
As always, these things are here for a good time, not a long time. Pop into your local Mad Mex restaurant, order delivery or through the Mad Mex app today.
