There are bar crawls and distillery tours, then there’s Project: Tour of 10 Malts in Scotland. It’s a three-day, 60-mile biking, hiking and kayaking tour of nine Islay distilleries and one Jura distillery. It’s like a modified triathlon, but with more peaty scotch whisky.

The Tour of 10 Malts is a journey to visit the who’s-who of Islay distilleries. On day one, participants hit Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. The bike ride continues the next day up to Bowmore, then a kayak trip across the Loch Indaal to make stops at Bruichladdich and Kilchoman. Before day two is over, there’s a quick kayak jaunt across the water to Jura and the Jura Distillery. Day three is all about making it back to the starting point around 20 miles away.

It’s not for the faint of heart, but the FAQ for the journey assures people that it’s not too strenuous. Rat Race, the company hosting the trip, describes it as “not physically tough” and “serene” with plenty of “time to breath in the surroundings rather than racing through it.”

“The Project is all about covering distance and joining the dots on the world’s most famous whisky islands,” Jim Mee, the founder of Rat Race, told Scotch Whisky. With sandy beaches, tranquil roads and, naturally, whisky, this one’s about the journey not the destination.

Tour of 10 Malts is up there for top ways to check off all the bucket list Islay distilleries. It runs from July 13-15, and costs around $630 per person. If that date doesn’t work for you, you can gather a group of six people and set up a private trip by emailing Rat Race. Distillery tours aren’t included (exercise can help a hangover, but not this level of exercise), but each participant will get a mini bottle at each stop. At the end of the adventure, (probably) tired participants can “enjoy a wee dram (or 10) to celebrate in style.”
