These Long Avocados Will Have You Looking at Smashed Avo in a Different Way

Introducing the Russell Avocado: a type of avocado found in Florida, that can grow up to 13 inches long.

We’ve never known avocados to be an aphrodisiac, but perhaps we were wrong.

This pic has made it’s way all over Instagram this morning for obvious reasons—what is it about sexy-shaped things? I have personally seen it multiple times, shared on different people’s stories from it’s original post via @gastroobscura; a page full of weird and wonderful food facts.

Just imagining the sheer amount of avocado smash we could make out of one half of a Russell avocado is pretty exciting, tbh. We’re getting hot under the collar in more ways than one.

While these “long-neck” avocados have been going viral recently, they’ve been around for years, by the name of; “Persea Americana Russell.” Their native habitat is Florida, in the US and according to Miami Fruit, can produce 12 slices of avocado toast per avocado.

These avos can often be confused for zucchinis or even pumpkins, as they have a glossy exterior which doesn’t resemble the usual textured surface of a regular “Hass” avocado.

There are yet to be any sightings of a Russell avocado trees in Australia and it’s pretty unlikely that they’d grow well here, as they need the heat and humidity that Florida provides. Apparently, they’re also quite hard (excuse the pun) to grow.

So for now, or until we can book a trip to Florida, these raunchy-shaped avocados will have to remain an internet sensation (and wet dream) for us Melburnians.
