It’s holiday season in San Diego, and while some of our favorite events won’t be taking place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the spirit of the season lives on with safe, socially distanced celebrations you can walk through, drive through and enjoy from the comfort of your car. In fact, there are so many festivals that it can be hard to decide what to spend your hard-earned money on. Not to worry, we’ve gathered the best experiences to help you plan your holiday fun accordingly. Happy holidays, San Diego!

Enjoy a winter wonderland at the Del

Thursday, November 26-Thursday, December 31

Holidays at the Del are always magical, and this year they’ve transformed the beachfront Windsor Lawn into a winter wonderland of sparkling lights, enormous decorated trees, and snowy surprises. Socially distanced photos with Santa will be available on select days, along with sips and treats at the Frostbite Bar, and craft kits like cookies, snow globes, and ornament decorating.

Stroll through a botanic delight

San Diego Botanic Garden
Wander through 37 acres of illuminated plant collections and garden areas, including the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory, the Rainforest, the Lawn Garden, and more at San Diego Botanic Garden’s Botanic Wonderland. Lighted animals, laser lighting, fire pits, and strolling musicians will be on hand nightly, and hot beverages and food will be available for purchase. Reservations are required and can be made online
Cost: Non-members: $18 for adults, $10 for children; Members: $10 for adults, $7 for children

Tour the holiday lights by trolley

Old Town Trolley Tours
Sit back and let your elf conductor take you on a tour of the best holiday sights on Old Town Trolley’s Holiday Lights & Sights Tour. You’ll see the festive lights of Old Town, Embarcadero, and Balboa Park on your 75 minute ride, including a 15-minute stop at Seaport Village for holiday festivities. Reservations are required, and accessible tours are available by calling 619-298-8687, option #0, at least 24 hours in advance.
Cost: $25, children ages three and under are free (on an adult’s lap)

Taste the season in Balboa Park

Friday, December 4-Sunday, December 6
Balboa Park
December Nights in Balboa Park has been a holiday tradition for more than 40 years, attracting more than 350,000 revelers to the park’s stunning displays. In order to keep the winning streak going in the age of COVID-19, the event has been transformed into Taste of December Nights, featuring 20 favorite vendors and food trucks from past December Nights. The drive-thru event at the Inspiration Point parking lot allows you to order and pick up your favorite food offerings from the safety of your car. The first 500 cars to arrive each day will score a Taste of December Nights tote filled with cool stuff, and daily giveaways include tickets to the park’s most popular venues, Padres swag, and more.

Drive into a dazzling light show

Del Mar Fairgrounds
Experience a magical evening, filled with amazing light displays, holograms and projection mapping at Holidays In Your Car at Del Mar Fairgrounds. Featuring over one million lights, 40 foot displays and high-end projectors casting computer-generated images onto sets, arches, and surfaces, you’ll be able to enjoy the spectacular show from the safety of your own vehicle while respecting social distance rules. Ticket prices are good for one car and as many people as there are seat belts in your vehicle. Reservations can be made online.

Enjoy a new twist on an old tale

Old Globe Theatre
The Old Globe Theatre has hosted a delightful production of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! forever, and they weren’t going to let COVID-19 spoil the season. This year, they’ve gone to the airwaves with free, audio-only performances on Saturday, December 5, Sunday, December 20, and Thursday, December 24 via KPBS Radio 89.5 FM, on the KPBS website and app, and on smart speakers. You’ll be able to sing along with “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and all your other favorite songs, so pour the hot chocolate and celebrate the holidays with everyone’s favorite humbug.

Take a walk on the wild side

For an unexpected twist on the holidays, take a worry-free guided walk through Lions, Tigers and Bears, San Diego’s only accredited big cat and bear sanctuary, and watch rescued exotic animals open their presents, splash around in their pools, and play with their brothers and sisters. Guidelines will be enforced to ensure a safe visit for guests and animals alike and proceeds benefit the rescued animals, providing food, enrichment, habitat maintenance, veterinary care, and more. 
Cost: Members: $40 for adults and $15 for kids. Non-members: $60 for adults and $25 for kids.

Experience an enchanted village

Friday, December 18-Wednesday, December 23
Lemon Grove
Noah Homes’ annual Enchanted Village returns for its third year, this time with modifications for safe, socially distanced viewing. You’ll experience over 500,000 lights, interactive displays, and fun attractions from the safety of your vehicle. The event begins at Steele Canyon High School and bends its way through a winter wonderland that includes a drive-thru candy cane light tunnel, an 18-foot Christmas tree, holiday celebrities like Buddy the Elf, plus themed zones like Holiday Under the Sea and Candyland. Proceeds support the residents of Noah Homes, a nonprofit that provides housing, services, and advocacy for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Reserve your time slot online.

Join in a Festival of Lights celebration

Del Mar Fairgrounds
Chabad of East County invites you to their Chanukah Spectacular, with a concert performance by Isreali pop star Gad Elbaz, all from the comfort of your car. The event includes a Grand Menorah lighting, Chanukah gifts for everyone, musical performances, and more. Bring your own food and beverages or purchase them at the venue. Reserve your spot online.
Cost: $99 per vehicle for general admission, and up to $1800, depending on your level of VIPness.

Watch The Nutcracker from your car

Del Mar Fairgrounds
Watch a live performance while staying warm and cozy in your car with City Ballet’s 26th annual production of the holiday favorite, The Nutcracker. Aided by a visual light show, multimedia entertainment and video screens, and the combination of an extra high 360 degree stage and screens, it’s guaranteed to be a great viewing experience for everyone. Reservations are required for the  two performances, at 5pm and 8pm. Your ticket is good for one car, and are offered on a first-come, first-parked basis.

Run around Pacific Beach (virtually) in a Santa suit

We’ll miss seeing several thousand Santas running down Garnet Street, but you can still run the San Diego Santa 5K Run anytime, anywhere this year, as the most festive race of the season goes virtual. Women have played a huge part shaping San Diego into the city it is today. In celebration of Women’s History Month, there are a variety of events across the city that commemorate women’s contributions to our community and culture. Home to the Women’s Museum of California, which hosts events throughout the year, be sure to check out all the ways to support and honor women this month. Discover works from overlooked women artists

Balboa Park
The San Diego Museum of Art currently has 20 modern and contemporary works of art on display from women who unjustly didn’t receive the same amount of fame as their male contemporaries. The museum’s Modern Women exhibit is your chance to see work from artists like Elaine de Kooning and Lee Krasner, who were overshadowed by artist husbands Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock but whose work has long deserved its own moment in the spotlight. The collection showcases pieces that range from acrylic paintings to photography, inviting us into an untapped artistic sphere.

Practice Sun Salutations while supporting a good cause

Make a difference in the lives of teen girls of colour while taking a yoga class at Kate Sessions Park. Organized by local nonprofit One Love Movement, all donations for the event go towards college scholarships for girls of the DETOUR F.A.N.C.Y. Expo & Leadership Academy, a mentorship program that promotes equity and inclusion in higher education for girls of colour. All while enjoying stunning views of Mission Bay.

Shop local women-owned businesses

What better way to celebrate the women in your community than by supporting their local businesses? The Women’s History Month Market, located in the FEMX Quarters venue, is a pop up market you don’t want to miss. The market will feature over 35 vendors from women artisans and you’ll find uniquely crafted sunglasses, jewellery, clothing, and more. The family-friendly (and pet-friendly) event will also include food and music.

Drink beer crafted by female brewers on International Women’s Day

Women were the original brewers of ale, after all, so it only makes sense to honour our past and present beer connoisseurs with dinner and brews. Located at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, Stone International Women’s Day Beer Dinner features three courses, each paired with a tasty beer specially brewed by a team of women at Stone Brewery. The event is part of a larger global celebration for International Women’s Day, where brewers all over the world brew a speciality beer that supports The Pink Boots Society, a non profit that empowers women and non-binary people in the beer industry through scholarships and education. Attend an exhibition celebrating female and non-binary artists

If you need another excuse to down some brews, Second Chance Beer Company is hosting its first ever Ladies & Pups Market for Women’s History Month. The brewery, which holds various events throughout the year, donates a percentage of its sales to animal rescue organizations in California and Arizona. The dog-friendly market will include pop ups from women-owned businesses such as Bold Bouquet, Wet Nose Pottery, and No, You Sit! Treats. For the occasion, Second Chance will serve Fistful of Gummies – Berry Edition, a rendition of their fruited sour beer created in collaboration with Pink Boots Society, an organization that supports women and non-binary individuals in the beer industry.

Attend a ceremony at the Women’s Museum of California

Perhaps San Diego’s largest Women’s History Month event, the San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame recognizes local women for their achievements in the community. The annual event, which takes place at Joan B. Kroc Theatre, is a project of the Women’s Museum of California, a museum dedicated to educating the public about women’s contributions through history with exhibits, programs, and events. Over 100 women have been inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame since the program was founded in 2001, and this year’s class includes notable women like activist Norma Chávez-Peterson and Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas. The event includes a VIP brunch followed by the Induction Ceremony. Be sure to purchase tickets early to secure your spot.

Join a community of local women and get inspired

The Women’s Speaker Series at Alesmith Brewing Company is a monthly community gathering where local women come together to support one another in achieving professional and personal goals. For this month, the Women’s Speaker Series features career coach and small business owner Laura Bashore, who will share her insight on how you can advance your career or business. Come hear about the roles San Diego women played during World War II

In the early 20th century, many women were not allowed or expected to be the breadwinners for their households, but things suddenly changed with the United States’ entry into World War II. Here’s your chance to learn about the real experiences of women who lived through WWll and how they navigated through it all. Presented by Oasis San Diego, head over to Mission Valley Library to attend this in-person event.

Attend a ballet program choreographed entirely by women

Experience not one but three world premiere ballet performances at The Rosin Box Project, a contemporary ballet company that works to redefine the concept of dance and how it’s experienced for both artists and audiences. To coincide with Women’s History Month, TRBP is kicking off its 2023 season with Empower, a female-led ballet program choreographed by TRBO Residents Lauren Flower, Bethany Green, and Carly Topazio. The program, which takes place at Light Box Theater, offers a fresh take on dance by pushing the boundaries of traditional ballet. Your ticket includes a post-show reception.

Hear music by a little-known female early 20th-century composer

While you may not be familiar with composer Alice Barnett Stevenson, she played an integral part in San Diego’s music scene during the early 1900s. Stevenson was an active member of various music organizations at the time, and she composed art songs for voice and piano and performed at schools all over the country. Her home became a hub for local recitals from visiting musicians, and was also where the San Diego Symphony was founded. This month, you can hear her compositions performed live for the first time in nearly 100 years at the San Diego History Center. Selected works by Stevenson will be performed by musical scholar Katina Mitchell and pianist Yewon Lee. Be sure to reserve tickets ahead of time.

Listen to Black San Diego women discuss important community issues

Saturday, March 25, 12 pm to 4 pm

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Friends of Malcolm X Library are hosting Ain’t I a Woman, an event featuring Black women who will be speaking about their professions and discussing the challenges faced within the workplace and the community while offering suggestions on how to further enhance and embrace equality. The event includes a Q&A panel discussion, door prizes, free raffles, as well as music, poetry, and dance. Seating is limited so be sure to reserve your spot early.
Cost: Free event. Lunch purchase is $15.
