Tony and Grammy Award-Winning Musical Jagged Little Pill Is Bringing Broadway to Sydney
With a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album and having received a record 15 Tony Award nominations last September (more than any other show in history), it’s safe to say Jagged Little Pill is one of the great Broadway-smash hit musicals of our generation.
Jagged Little Pill is inspired by the Grammy Award-winning album of the same name by Canadian rock superstar Alanis Morissette. One of the highest-selling debut albums ever made, Jagged Little Pill has sold 33 million copies worldwide and continues to be one of the most popular albums of all time.
The musical isn’t simply based on the album, though, and was written by Morissette and Glen Ballard, too. The show includes a string of hits including the banger, “You Oughta Know”, plus “Hand In My Pocket” and “Head Over Feet”.
From this week, Sydney audiences can experience the vibrancy, poignancy, and sheer joy of Jagged Little Pill for themselves when this Broadway hit, starring Natalie Bassingthwaighte, opens for a short exclusive season at Sydney’s Theatre Royal. You want to book your tickets quickly, because it’s only running until December 19th.
The ARIA award-winning performer, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, is one of Australia’s most soulful entertainers with a voice that is pure rock chick power—and she joins the cast as Mary Jane Healy. Bassingthwaighte is backed by a stellar cast that includes Tim Draxl as Steve Healy, Maggie McKenna as Jo, Liam Head as Nick Healy, and making her musical debut, Emily Nkomo as Frankie Healy.
The stage show is also directed by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus, whose interpretation of the contemporary themes of the show brings authenticity to the stage that resonates with audiences. That’s why Boston Globe critic Christopher Muther describes Jagged Little Pill as “wildly entertaining” and “wickedly funny in just the right places”.
Jagged Little Pill is based on the book by Tony and Academy Award-winning writer Diablo Cody, who penned Juno. Her script has a searing wit, a fast pace, and a knack for tugging at the audience’s heartstrings long after they’ve left the theatre.
The musical tells the story of the perfectly imperfect Healy family. There’s an ambitious mum battling secret issues, a workaholic dad, a high achieving son, and a 16-year-old adopted daughter who is striving to make herself seen and heard.
This high energy musical never settles into despair, thanks to Diane Paulus’ direction and the high energy choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui—one of the favourite choreographers of American superstar Beyoncé.
“We wanted to produce something that was not just another Broadway musical, but was true to the legacy of the record,” said Vivek J.Tiwary, one of Jagged Little Pill’s producers. “We wanted it to be an entertaining musical with a message.”
Certainly, the production was not rushed, with the producers including Arvind Ethan David, Eva Price, Howard Panter for Trafalgar Entertainment, and Torben Brookman for GWB Entertainment devoting all their time and energy to ensuring that it would instantly sizzle on stage.
After Sydney’s stages fell dark in our own lockdown, Jagged Little Pill is the illuminating and exciting spectacle we need to spark joy across Australian stages again.
Don’t miss out on experiencing Jagged Little Pill with a short, exclusive season at Sydney’s Theatre Royal from December 2 to 19. It then moves to Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre from January 2. You can grab your tickets here.
